For centuries, Jewish tradition has held a special place for the connection between a person’s name and a verse from Tanakh. Known as a pasuk shem, or “name verse,” it is traditionally chosen in one of two ways: a verse that begins with the first letter of a person’s name and ends with the last, or a verse in which the name itself appears.
The custom is traditionally associated with the daily Amidah, where the name verse is recited near the end of the prayer, before Yihyu L'Ratzon. But you do not have to pray the Amidah to keep this tradition. It can be kept as a personal daily practice, recited or reflected upon throughout the day, allowing the connection between your name, the verse, and its spiritual meaning to remain close.
At its heart is a beautiful idea: that a person’s name is deeply connected to the soul, and that connecting the name to a verse of Torah keeps that identity close. In later Jewish tradition, reciting the name verse became associated with the spiritual protection of Torah and with remembering one’s name when the soul returns to its creator.
